I was in elementary school when I first saw Rent. I saw it with my best friend, who left the film dancing and singing Seasons of Love at the top of her lungs.  Whereas I didn't sleep for a week. 8 year old me would toss and turn thinking about New York, the AIDs epidemic, homelessness, and performance.

I grew fascinated by the tortured artist complex. Perhaps I didn't have the means to vocalize that fascination, but nevertheless it brewed.

In stages of life, I've thought, if pain is unavoidable, and let's face it, everywhere we turn there's pain, at least there is beauty to be assembled from all the trauma.

As an adult, I still believe that sorrow can crystalize into art. But only if there's space, support, and transparency. Life is hard enough organically. Our humanity, our vulnerability, our softness, and our creativity deserve to hear less no's and more yes's.  No one can pour from an empty cup.

*And for the record, we all need that best friend who sings "in daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee" while you're having an existential crisis.
